The Indian Maritime University (IMU), headquartered in Chennai, was established on 14th November 2008 as a teaching-cum-affiliating university under the aegis of the Ministry Of Shipping, Government of India. It was set up to promote maritime studies, training,research and extension with focus on emerging areas like oceanography, maritime history, maritime laws, maritime security, search and rescue, transportation of dangerous cargo, environmental studies and other related fields, and to achieve excellence in these areas. The oldest of the IMU Campuses i.e. IMU Navi Mumbai Campus Was established in 1927.
IMU has 6 Campuses at Chennai, Kochi, Kolkata, Mumbai Port , Navi Mumbai and Visakhapatnam. IMU conducts the Common Entrance Test (IMU-CET) every year on All India basis for admissions to Its Programmes for IMU campuses and Affiliated Institutes.
As per DGS Training Circular 12 of 2020, dated 01.04.2020, all Maritime Training Institutes [MTIs] regulated by DG Shipping are required to admit candidates on the basis of IMU-CET ranking and as amended from time to time. IMU-CET is mandatory for admission to DGS approved Programmes.

Hence Candidates seeking admission in Pre-Sea Courses Diploma in Nautical Science, B.Sc. (Nautical -Science) and B.E/B.Tech. (Marine Engineering) to any MTI (Govt. or Private- Affiliated to any University) are required to qualify in IMU-CET.
